Spring and summer are the times of maximum proliferation of mosquitoes and with them comes their annoying bite. But why do we attract them? The question lies in three chemical compounds that humans generate: lactic acid, the amount of carbon dioxide we exhale and octenol. In addition, our body temperature, as well as the smell we give off, which depends on the skin microbiota of each person, would also act as a claim for these insects. All these factors are uncontrollable on our part, so, to repel mosquitoes and not have to deal with their annoying and irritating bite, we will only have to influence the insect's receptors. This is where mosquito repellents, popularly known as mosquito repellents, come in, which manage to confuse insects, preventing them from locating the person to bite.

Thus, we can find chemical-based repellents, such as DEET, icaridin or IR3535®. They are used to prevent bites from insects such as the common mosquito, tiger mosquito and / or fleas due to their high effectiveness and low toxicity to the skin. In special situations (sensitive skin, infant age, during pregnancy,...) one type or another will be more indicated and it is advisable to consult with a health professional. It should be remembered that mosquitoes and other insects are vectors of diseases. This is especially important when traveling to tropical areas with endemic mosquito-borne diseases. In these cases, biocidal repellents will have to be prioritized, due to their greater effectiveness. On the other hand, we have organic or vegetable-based mosquito repellents, such as citriodiol or citronella oil (the latter is not biocidal and has a lower efficacy).

Botanical repellents are extracted from plants that produce substances to defend against insect attacks. These active ingredients are present, as a general rule and in higher concentration, in the essential oils of some botanical species (Eucalyptus and Cymbopogon). Finally, some precautions can be incorporated to minimize insect bites: use cotton clothing and discreet colors, which cover the maximum skin. Avoid the use of perfumes or cosmetics with intense perfume. In risk areas, use mosquito nets. And, in the event of an intense reaction after a bite or feeling unwell, it is necessary to go to the health care services.
