Pharmacological properties

Antiparasitic for cutaneous use containing imidacloprid and permethrin. It acts as an insecticide, acaricide and repellent.

Imidacloprid acts against adult fleas and larval stages. The larval stages of the dog's environment die upon contact with a treated animal. Permethrin also acts as a repellent.

Advantix has a repellent effect on ticks, sandflies and mosquitoes. Consequently, the risk of contracting vector-borne diseases in dogs -CVBD- (borreliosis, ricketsiosis, ehrlichiosis, leishmaniasis) is reduced. However, if environmental conditions are unfavourable, the transmission of infectious diseases by these parasites cannot be completely excluded. It also has a repellent effect against the stable fly so it contributes to the prevention of fly bite dermatitis.

Interactions and incompatibilities

None known.

Directions

Dogs:

- Prevention and treatment of flea infestations (Ctenocephalides felis, Ctenocephalides canis).

Fleas on the dog die during the first 24 hours after the application of the drug.

One treatment prevents a subsequent flea infestation for four weeks.

The drug may be used as part of a treatment strategy for flea allergy dermatitis (DAPP).

- Treatment of infestations by chewing lice (Trichodectes canis).

- The drug is effective as a persistent repellent and acaricide against tick infestations (Rhipicephalus sanguineus and Ixodes ricinus for four weeks and Dermacentor reticulatus for three weeks).

By repelling and killing the vector Rhipicephalus sanguineus, the veterinary medicinal product reduces the likelihood of transmission of the pathogen Ehrlichia canis, thereby reducing the risk of canine ehrlichiosis. It has been shown in studies that risk reduction starts 3 days after application of the veterinary medicinal product and persists for 4 weeks.

Ticks that are already present on the dog may not die within the first two days after treatment, so they may remain attached and visible. Therefore, at the time of treatment it is recommended to remove existing ticks on the dog to prevent them from adhering and ingesting blood.

- A treatment has a repellent (antifeeding) effect against sandflies (Phlebotomus papatasi for two weeks and Phlebotomus perniciosus for three weeks), against mosquitoes (Aedes aegypti for two weeks and Culex pipiens for four weeks) and against the stable fly (Stomoxys calcitrans) for 4 weeks.

Contraindications

Do not use in cats.

In the absence of data, do not use in puppies less than 7 weeks of age or in dogs weighing less than 1.5 kg.

Do not use in case of hypersensitivity to the active substances or to any excipient.

Adverse reactions

Very rarely, reactions such as local itching, rubbing and scratching of the skin, hair loss and redness at the application site or lethargy may be observed, which usually resolve spontaneously.

Very rarely, changes in the behavior of dogs (agitation, restlessness, growling or whimpering), gastrointestinal symptoms (vomiting, diarrhea, hypersalivation, decreased appetite) and neurological signs such as unsteady movements and muscle contraction in permethrin-susceptible dogs. They are transient signs and usually resolve spontaneously.

Poisoning in the dog is unlikely to occur after accidental ingestion of the drug. If this were the case, the symptoms would be neurological such as tremors and lethargy. Treatment should be symptomatic. No specific antidote is known.

Route of administration

Cutaneous use.

Dosage

Apply only to healthy skin.

The minimum dose is 10 mg/kg imidacloprid and 50 mg/kg permethrin.

Dogs = 4 kg: Administer a pipette of Advantix Spot-on Solution for Dogs up to 4 kg.

Dogs >4 kg = 10 kg: Administer a pipette of Advantix Spot-on Solution for Dogs over 4 to 10 kg.

Dogs >10 kg = 25 kg: Administer a pipette of Advantix Spot-on Solution for Dogs over 10 to 25 kg.

Dogs >25 kg = 40 kg: Administer a pipette of Advantix Spot-on Solution for Dogs over 25 kg.

For dogs >40 kg: Administer the appropriate combination of pipettes.

Remove a pipette from the container. Hold the pipette up and remove the cap. Turn the cap over to break the pipette seal with a twist.

For dogs weighing 10 kg or less: Separate the coat between the shoulders until the skin is visible. Place the tip of the pipette on the skin and squeeze it firmly until all its contents are emptied directly onto the skin.

For dogs weighing more than 10 kg: Apply the entire contents of the pipette evenly distributed among four points on the dorsal line of the animal from the shoulders to the base of the tail. Separate the hair from each application site until the skin is visible. Place the tip of the pipette on the skin and squeeze it gently to deposit some of its contents. Do not apply an excessive amount in the same spot, as it could slide down the dog's side.

It is recommended to treat all dogs that live in the home.

The drug is still effective even if the animal gets wet. However, intense and prolonged exposure to water should be avoided as efficacy may be reduced. If this is the case, try again but at most once a week.

For optimal effectiveness of the drug when it is necessary to wash the dog with shampoo, it is recommended to do so before the application of Advantix or at least two weeks after.

In case of chewing lice, a veterinary examination is recommended 30 days post-treatment, as some animals may require additional treatment.

It can be used during pregnancy and lactation.

Special precautions

For animals:

The contents of the pipette should be prevented from coming into contact with the eyes or mouth of the dog and any animal should be prevented from orally ingesting the medicinal product by licking the application site.

Do not use in cats.

This medication is very poisonous to cats and could be fatal due to the specific physiology of the cat that is unable to metabolize certain compounds, including permethrin. To prevent cats from accidentally exposing themselves to the drug, keep treated dogs away from cats until the site of application of the drug is dry, thus avoiding the possibility of licking by the cat. If this occurs, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Consult your veterinarian before using the drug in sick or weakened dogs.

Do not allow the dog to come into contact with surface water until at least 48 h after treatment, as the drug is harmful to aquatic organisms.

For the person administering the medicine:

Avoid contact of the medication with the skin, eyes or mouth.

Do not eat, drink or smoke during application.

Wash your hands after treatment. In case of splashing on the skin, wash immediately with soap and water.

People with known skin hypersensitivity may be especially sensitive to this drug.

In extremely rare cases, transient sensory skin irritations, such as tingling, stinging or numbness, may be observed.

In case of accidental eye contact, they should wash their eyes with plenty of water.

If eye or skin irritation persists, or if the medicine is accidentally swallowed, seek medical advice immediately and show the package leaflet.

Children should not come into contact with treated dogs until the site of application of the drug is dry. This can be avoided by treating the animal at night.

Newly treated dogs should not sleep together with their owners, especially with children.

Other precautions:

The solvent in Advantix Spot-on Solution can stain certain materials, such as plastics, leather, fabrics and polished surfaces. Allow the application area to dry before allowing contact with such materials.
